MAKING YOUR BATHROOM SAFER
WATER TEMPERATURE
The temperature setting on your water heater should not exceed 49°C (120°F). Exercise extra caution when replacing an older water heater, as the water temperature may be significantly higher than what you’re accustomed to.
Prior to bathing or showering, it’s advisable to assess the water temperature using your elbow.
Whenever feasible, consider upgrading your faucets to thermostatic models that offer improved control over water temperature.
PREVENTING FALLS
To avoid slipping on wet surfaces, place a non-slip mat in the bathtub and shower, and on the bathroom floor.
A SOLID GRIP
Enhancing the safety and ease of accessing the bathtub can be achieved by installing grab bars on the walls adjacent to it. In some instances, transitioning to a shower may offer a simpler entry and exit. Shower enclosures can feature grab bars and specially designed bench seats, allowing for a seated shower experience.
For individuals who encounter challenges when getting on or off the toilet due to seat height, modifications can be made. This includes the installation of grab bars on the wall beside the toilet or the addition of a raised toilet seat to increase its height.
IMPROVED LIGHTING
If you often get up at night to go to the bathroom, install night lights in the hallway and bathroom to help you find your way safely.
EASY-TO-REACH OBJECTS
A significant number of falls happen when individuals attempt to access items just out of their reach. It’s essential to maintain easy access to everyday necessities such as soap, shampoo, and towels. Avoid the risky practice of climbing onto the toilet or the tub’s edge to retrieve items. If necessary, utilize a stable, low step stool with non-slip footing to safely reach objects.
A DOOR THAT’S EASY TO UNLOCK
The bathroom door handle should have a mechanism that allows it to be unlocked from the outside in the event of an emergency.
