preparation-and-injection-using-an-insulin-pen

When using an insulin pen to inject insulin, follow these simple steps:
  1. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Gather all necessary supplies (e.g., pen, needle, alcohol swab).
  3. If you’re using cloudy insulin, gently roll the cartridge or injector pen between your hands ten times to mix. Then, gently invert the cartridge or injector pen (from top to bottom) ten times until the suspension becomes milky white.
  4. Clean the tip of the insulin cartridge with an alcohol swab.
  1. Attach the needle to the pen and remove its shields.
  2. Prime the pen by dialing two units, holding the needle upwards, and pressing the injection button until you see a few drops of insulin. Repeat if necessary.
  3. Set your dose by turning the dial to the correct number of units.
  • Preferred injection sites are the abdomen (particularly), thighs and top of the buttocks. Rotating injection sites and injection points is recommended.
  • Clean the injection site with soap and water. If an alcohol pad is used (e.g., at the hospital), allow the skin to dry before proceeding with the injection.
  • Insert the needle into the skin and press the injection button all the way in.
  • Wait 10 secondes.

  • Remove the needle carefully from the pen and recap the pen.
