DIRECTIONS FOR USE: HOLDING CHAMBER

The valved holding chamber is designed to help you use an inhaler by keeping the medication in suspension for a few seconds until you can breathe it in. Valved holding chambers come in several shapes and sizes. Your pharmacist will help you choose the one that is right for you.

  • Uncap the holding chamber.
  • Shake the inhaler well and remove the cap.
  • Insert the inhaler into the holding chamber, using the flexible end.
  • Place the holding chamber’s mouthpiece (rigid end) into your mouth.
  • Squeeze the inhaler to release a dose.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply, holding your breath for 10 seconds before exhaling slowly.
  • Breathe slowly; some devices emit a whistle sound if you’re breathing too fast.
  • If another dose is needed, wait 1 to 2 minutes between doses.
  • When assisting someone with a holding chamber, have them breathe into the device normally.
  • Press down on the canister to release a dose of medication.
  • Allow the individual to inhale and exhale in the holding chamber a few times.
  • If using a holding chamber with a facemask, ensure a tight seal between the face and the mask.
  • After releasing the dose, hold the mask in place for 5 to 6 breaths.
  • Wash the chamber with soap and water, letting it air dry (avoid wiping it with a cloth).
  • Replace holding chambers approximately every 12 months.
